If you're a Lowe's loyalist, the Lowe's Advantage Card can make a lot of sense. Unlike store cards that give you rewards points that have value only if you return to the store and spend more money, this $0-annual-fee card gives you a flat 5% discount on almost everything at Lowe's. The card also offers deferred-interest financing for larger purchases — but if you take advantage of it, you need to be careful, or you could be in for a nasty surprise.

The Citi Premier℠ Card costs $95 a year starting the second year. For most, it’s the option that’s just right. Points give you lots of flexibility, as you can redeem them for a variety of travel rewards. And if you redeem them through the ThankYou® Travel Center, they’re worth 25% more. If you’re a student with a limited credit history, the Journey Student Credit Card from Capital One is like taking an introductory course in the credit world. Your credit line will likely start off low, but the good news is you can graduate to a higher credit limit fairly quickly if you play your cards right. While some other student cards in this category offer reward programs with higher cash-back rates or other perks like introductory APR periods or sign-up bonuses, those programs may feel a bit advanced for “credit freshmen” to manage. Capital One’s card keeps it simple for those beginning their educational credit journey.

Discover it® Secured is 2019’s best secured credit card because it has a $0 annual fee and rewards cardholders with 1% to 2% cashback on purchases. The Discover it Secured card also doubles the rewards cardholders earn the first year. Very few secured cards even offer rewards.

Everyday rewards are a staple of the Bank of America® Cash Rewards credit card. Its $0 annual fee makes it easy to get the most out of your rewards card. Earn 3% cash back on purchases in a chosen category and 2% at US grocery stores and wholesale clubs for the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter, reverting to 1% after. All other purchases earn you a consistent 1% cashback.

When it comes to travel credit cards, you typically get what you pay for. But the Navy Federal Credit Union® Visa Signature® Flagship Rewards Credit Card bucks that trend, offering far more than many other cards at similar price points. The card has a modest annual fee, but in exchange, you'll earn high ongoing rewards, not to mention a fat sign-up bonus that easily outstrips the cost of card ownership, plus plenty of travel-friendly side perks. There are a couple of potential stumbling blocks. You have to join the Navy Federal Credit Union to apply, which may be a problem if you don't meet the eligibility criteria or just don't want the extra legwork. And while earning rewards with the card is easy, redeeming them requires jumping through a few hoops.
