Modest initial bonus. For every $100 that you charge to the card during the first 30 days after account opening, you get a discount of $0.25 per gallon the next time you fill up at a BP station. That might sound good, but it actually provides a pretty poor rate of return. Let's say a gallon of gas costs $2.50 and your car holds 20 gallons (the limit for the discount). That means you'd save $5 for every $150 spent, which translates to just 3.33% cash back. The best gas credit cards give you 5% back without dictating the type of station you have to use.

Decent ongoing gas rewards. On an ongoing basis, the BP Credit Card rewards you with a $0.10/gallon discount for every $100 that you spend at BP. You also get 3% back on groceries, travel and dining, as well as 1% back on everything else. The top-end earning rate is solid for BP loyalists, but nothing about this offer warrants committing if you haven't already.

Terrible for carrying a balance. Carrying a balance from month to month with the BP Visa Credit Card means dramatically overpaying on interest. After all, you need good or excellent credit to get the BP Visa, which has a high APR, and the average credit cards for people with good and excellent credit charge 19.24% and 12.99%.

No annual fee, but there’s a good-credit price tag. While the BP Gas Credit Card's lack of an annual fee saves you about $19.76 per year compared to the average credit card, it doesn't distinguish the BP Visa from most comparable gas rewards cards. And though its rewards don't really qualify for the category, the BP Visa Card is similar to the market's best credit cards in the sense that you need good or excellent credit to get it.

Better options are available. If you don't get approved for the BP Visa, you might be offered the BP Gas Card instead. You generally only need fair credit to get the Gas Card, which can only be used at BP stations. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Before deciding to apply for one of the BP credit cards, you should definitely compare them to the market's best gas rewards cards for people in your credit category, as well as to the best overall rewards card.
